Landscaping: Get ready for spring!

Spring is on the way, the birds are singing, the weather is warming, and longer days are on the way! Now is the time to begin all of the landscaping ideas that have been on the back burner during the cold winter. Now is the time to plant a garden, build that retaining wall you have always wanted, get rid of those weeds that have been bothering you for the last year, or even simply take care of some of those persistent "bald spots" that seem to keep popping up around your lawn.

Here are some tips to help you as you prepare your landscaping for a beautiful spring:

Lawn Watering Basics

Early morning is the most efficient time to water. Municipal water pressure is at its peak, and there's usually less wind to distort the spray from its intended target. Also the lawn will have all day to dry before nightfall. Foliage that sits wet overnight can invite diseases.

An exception to this rule is the Southwest and areas with low humidity and high daytime temperatures. In those areas, less water lost to evaporation if you water in the evening or at night.

Lawn Quality

Lawns will survive without fertilizer. However, in the absence of fertilizer, a lawn is prone to deteriorate as a result of seasonal stressors and is less likely to fulfill its promised environmental bebefits.

As a lawn runs short of nutrients, the first thing to go is color.  The luscious green fades. Over time, the lawn thins and loses resiliency, and eventually thin spots provide space for weeds to move in. Deficient grass is vigorous, and if diseases and insects attack, it may not survive the damage.
